INDEPENDENT FUEL ECONOMY TESTING

AERODYNAMICALLY DESIGNED.
BUILT FOR BETTER FUEL MILEAGE.

Mesilla Valley Transportation Solutions tested Ex-Guard grille guards under controlled, real-world conditions—so fleets can weigh protection, fuel use and total operating cost with verified data.

THE INDEPENDENT VERDICT

MVTS VALIDATES EX-GUARD PERFORMANCE.

MVT Solutions found that Ex-Guard’s tested grille guards provide front-end protection with little to no negative impact on overall fuel efficiency. The evaluation used simultaneous vehicles, controlled speeds and instrumentation that accounts for fuel consumption, aerodynamics, rolling resistance and driver behavior.

  • Independent, third-party testing
  • Controlled track and vehicle specifications
  • Results expressed in both percentage and gallons per 1,000 miles

2024 MVTS TESTMVTS Test Results for XG-125G3 & Ex-Guard XG-150G3

October 15, 2024 — Las Cruces, New Mexico. MVTS measured only -0.31 gal/1,000 miles (-0.32%) for the XG-125G3 and -0.40 gal/1,000 miles (-0.41%) for the XG-150G3.

The test used a 2024 Freightliner Cascadia with a DD15 engine, DT12-1750-DHE 12-speed transmission and a 53-foot refrigerated trailer at a 46,000-pound gross vehicle weight. Testing was conducted at a steady 65 MPH on a private Texas track.

  • XG-125G3: approximately $164 in annual fuel impact
  • XG-150G3: approximately $211 in annual fuel impact
  • Annual examples assume 125,000 miles and diesel at $4.214 per gallon

2019 MVTS TESTMVTS Test Results for LT-325G2 & LT-350G2

May 15, 2019 — Las Cruces, New Mexico. MVTS found that the LT-325 had no discernable effect on fuel economy, while the LT-350 had a small negative impact of -0.51%—less than the tested tractor’s side mirrors.

Two 2019 International LT tractors ran simultaneously at 65 MPH on a nine-mile circle track. The vehicles used Cummins X15 engines, Eaton 10-speed automated transmissions and 53-foot Hyundai dry vans with Michelin Energy Guard aerodynamic systems.

  • LT-325G2: no measured fuel-economy effect
  • LT-350G2: 0.51 gallon per 1,000 miles
  • Round tubing and stand-off mounting allow airflow around the guard

MVTS CERTIFIED TESTMVTS Test Results for XG-150G2

MVTS Certified testing found that the XG-150G2 had a minor fuel impact of -0.58 gal/1,000 miles (-0.56%), again less than the tested tractor’s side mirrors.

The evaluation was designed to quantify fuel cost so fleets can compare it with front-end repair expense and downtime. MVTS testing is independent third-party work and does not receive payment from products tested.

  • Annual example: 73 additional gallons at 125,000 miles
  • Guard opens for hood access and can transfer between compatible tractors with the correct mounts

CALCULATING TOTAL COST

PUT THE TEST DATA IN FLEET TERMS.

The published annual examples below use 125,000 miles per truck. Fuel cost is calculated as additional gallons per year multiplied by the fleet’s actual diesel price.

39 GAL/YR

0.31 gal / 1,000 miles

XG-150G3

50 GAL/YR

0.40 gal / 1,000 miles

LT-325G2

0 GAL/YR

No measured fuel-economy effect
