Front Underrun Mitigation System™
What is Front Underrun Mitigation System™?
Rigorously designed and tested over a multi-year period, Ex-Guard® MAX™ with our exclusive Front Underrun Mitigation System has been engineered for fleets that want to take their front-end protection beyond standard OEM equipment by meeting a global benchmark for the prevention of front underrun incursions.
While North America doesn’t mandate underrun protection, we recognized that many fleets want a product that meets global benchmarks — so we built MAX for them. Ex-Guard MAX has been independently tested and validated against the performance criteria of UN ECE R93 for front underrun protection.
Ex-Guard MAX has emerged as the clear choice for fleets looking to further enhance their safety profile and provide their fleet with yet another level of damage protection.
Testing Methodology:
Three points were tested for the Front Underride Protection test. Each was impacted by a testing apparatus up to a specified percentage of the maximum weight of the vehicle at varying locations. The guard well exceeded both the force and duration of the required testing.

Why is Front Underrun Mitigation Critical?
For trucking fleets, front underrun mitigation helps prevent vehicles from sliding under the front of a truck in a collision, reducing damage, liability, and downtime. It supports alignment with global safety benchmarks, protects a fleet’s reputation, and shows a commitment to safety that can lower costs and improve client and insurance relationships.
How It’s Made:
Steer Tire Defender 3.0™ and Front Underrun Mitigation™: Starting with Ex-Guard’s class-leading XG-150G3 guard, Ex-Guard engineers have added an additional lower tube made of 8-gauge high-tensile steel with EVRCoat™ PVC coating and then reinforced it with plate steel gusseting so the guard can withstand major impacts not only from head-on impacts, but from the side as well.
Ex-Guard™ MAX was designed and then tested by a third-party, independent, IIHS-certified testing laboratory as engineered and tested to align with a global benchmark.
FAQs About Underrun Mitigation:
How Much More Does the Extra Protection Weigh?
✅ Most systems weigh only about 50 pounds more than a traditional grille guard (around 200-250 lbs. total), with minimal impact on front axle load.
✅ Any additional weight is typically offset by reduced downtime, repair costs, and financial benefits.
Will a Grille Guard Impact My Fuel Economy?
✅ Fleets using Ex-Guard report up to 80% fewer towed accidents and as much as 97% savings on front-end replacement parts, far outweighing minor fuel differences.
Is there a Requirement for FUPDs in the United States and Canada?
✅ No. Currently, there is no standing requirement for Front Underrun Protection in the United States or Canada.
✅ Our existing guards continue to deliver proven ROI and protection — MAX is simply an additional option for fleets with advanced safety goals.
